5 Tips from the Happiest People in the World
Having a bad week, month, decade? We can help with that. Or rather, some of the happiest people on earth can share their experiences with you about the elusive path to happiness. From the Dalai Lama to Oprah Winfrey, we found quotes and TED talks (#obvi) that’ll teach and inspire you to think about happiness in a new way. Warning: May cause significant life transformations.
1. “Happiness is not something ready-made; It comes from your own actions.“
Essentially, the Dalai Lama believes that to be happy, you must be happy. Sure, that may sound like circular logic but hear us out!
If happiness comes from your own actions, that means that your happiness is wholly dependent on you. Holy empowering! Whether you’re unhappy today because of an unfulfilling job, a failed relationship, or for no discernable reason at all, you take the steps toward being happy. You can research a new job, let go of past hurts (maybe with some help from Ben & Jerry), or consult a therapist. Like superheroes, happy people aren’t born, they’re made.
2. “There is a possibility for change because all emotions are fleeting.”
Renowned expert and author on compassion and happiness Matthieu Ricard is often called the ‘happiest man on earth'. Unsurprisingly, he’s also a Buddhist monk. In his almost sermon-like TED talk “The habits of happiness” Ricard deftly mixes philosophy, spirituality and research from neuroscience and arrives at one conclusion. It’s entirely possible for you to transform your mind. Through meditation (or mind training) we are all capable of reaching a state of serenity and fulfilment -even when circumstances are far from ideal
3. “The art of fulfilment”
It’s hard not to feel motivated to change your entire life when listening to Tony Robbins. And in this inspiring talk, “Why we do what we do” Robbins spits out mantras and quotables every twenty seconds. For example, “Decision is the ultimate power.” Like, woah. But what does Robbins believe is the secret to happiness or fulfilment? Spoiler alert: Grow and give.
4. “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”
Mahatma Gandhi couldn’t be more right. Think about the way you feel when you say you’re going start meditating -and then don’t? The farther the distance between your beliefs, thoughts and actions, the farther away you’ll be from a state of happiness. The closer they are, the closer you’ll be. Get your head out of the clouds (There can only be one Beyonce), go after your dreams or change them to fit who you really are: mind, body and spirit.
5. “Surround yourself only with people who are going to take you higher.”
Oprah Winfrey is the epitome of a person who has struggled and used her struggle to create a life of her dreams. Like the other “happy” people in this list, Oprah also recommends changing your mindset, meditation and giving as a road to happiness. But this quote, hits the nail on the head. And will remind you that sometimes, it’s not sadness, you’re just hanging out with the wrong squad. Surround yourself with people who love you, that’s the final tip from the world’s happiest people.
