10 Reasons I Love Coconut Oil
As you probably know by now, I have a slight obsession with coconuts! Want to know why? Well, these hairy little fruits are more than just a desert island treat - they support weight loss, provide increased energy, reduce cholesterol...the list goes on and on. In fact they have so many healthy qualities that some health professionals want to add them to the ever expanding list of superfoods. And don’t even get me started on coconut oil…it is quite simply a miracle in a pot! It’s a cooking dream machine, great for your skin and the health benefits are endless. I’m completely obsessed with using coconut oil for well, just about everything, so I wanted to share the top 10 reasons why I love it so much:
1. Homemade body scrub
There’s nothing better than homemade natural beauty products and this is one of my favourites! Simply add coconut oil to sea salt (or sugar) and massage all over your body in circular movements. This natural body scrub will not only get rid of dead skin cells, it will also increase the natural flow of circulation and you’ll be left with beautiful glowing skin! Just be careful around the face and neck area as the skin here is very delicate.
2. Helps to reduce stretch marks and scarring
Stretch marks and scarring are something I really suffer from on my legs and face. Not only does coconut oil make my skin look smoother, but I also permanently smell of COCONUTS! A dream combo.
3. Intensive hair mask
As I spend half of my life on the beach, my hair is super dry and it is also naturally very frizzy so I’m always on the look out for new hair products that can help to make my hair feel smooth and sleek. I was recently delighted to discover that coconut oil makes for the most perfect hair mask! You simply need to apply the oil to dry hair, cover with a hair cap and leave it to do its thing overnight. Give your hair a good wash in the morning (a really good wash) and you’ll be left with beautifully shiny hair.
4. Hair de-frizzer
If you don’t have time to create a coconut oil hair mask over night, try using a small amount as a de-frizzer once you have blow-dried your hair.
5. Energy booster
Try adding a teaspoon of coconut oil to your morning coffee or tea for a natural energy boost! It will also mix up the flavor of your morning beverage and we all know that variety is the spice of life.
6. Adds texture and flavour to smoothies
When it comes to smoothies, I love to try new recipes and test out different ingredients. Now my combinations don’t alwaysss work but one ingredient that consistently improves the flavour and texture is coconut oil. You only need a small amount but it adds a depth that you can’t achieve with many other ingredients.
7. Massage oil
Little needs to be said about this other than it feels good, smellllsss good and if you ask nicely you might even get a free massage from a loved one. Winner!
8. The perfect pedicure
As I’m fortunate enough to live by the beach, sand naturally exfoliates my feet but the salt water does tend to make them very dry. Coconut oil is perfect for treating dry skin and also contains anti-fungal and antibacterial properties that help to combat athlete’s foot and fungal infections.
9. Healthy cooking substitute
It is a delicious and healthy substitute to cooking oil and has a higher smoke point than other oils. Perfect for high-heat cooking, such as big juicy kangaroo steaks.
10. Body and lip moisturiser
The final reason why I love coconut oil so much is that it acts as an excellent moisturiser for your body, hands and lips. Take a small amount and rub it on any dry areas. Leave over night and you’ll notice a big difference in the morning!
